Improving sound quality

Screen Shot 2015-05-19 at 14.19.05

One of the suggestions Jackie made was to improve the sound quality during the interviews. This is because it can be hard to hear over the backing music, which means the video loses some content.

I have managed to change this by editing the sound settings on the audio mixer. Although I did not know how to do this previously, after researching the subject I found the best way to fix the problem. I increased each audio setting, meaning the sound has increased enough to hear well.

Sound problems with video

Although nearly finishing the video, I am having some problems with the sound. I have a soundtrack, which I then fade when students are speaking to the camera. However, I cannot get the soundtrack quiet enough to be able to hear the students to speak.

I could completely mute the music whilst they are speaking, but I like the idea of the music being in the background whilst they speak. I will have to ask around to see if anyone knows how to fix this problem. I will also research on the internet in to whether I can alter the volume on different shots in order to hear the students better.

Sound critique

Overall, I feel that our five minute feature went well, and when we listened back to it I thought it sounded both well planned and professional, with different methods of recording, such as studio pieces, interviews and vox pops.

After a confusing start, with us not knowing what to base our feature on, we decided that student finance would be the best way to go, as we all have our own experiences and had the opportunity to gain a professional’s opinion from our university. We were initially also going to include more vox pops of other students, however time constraints of the feature meant that they would not fit in.

Our feature suited our target audience well, as all students have to go through student finance so will understand the problems people face.

After originally worrying that I would not know how to edit a piece, whilst working I feel I made a good contribution to the group, both in terms of gaining interviews and editing the piece. Although we had some problems with our group’s attendance, the majority of the group made a significant difference, and at most times we worked well as a group.

Research- Breves de Trottoirs

This is another Web documentary that I really enjoyed looking at. It is called ‘Breves de Trottoirs’, which roughly translates to ‘Sidewalk Shorts’.

Created by Olivier Lambert and Thomas Salva, it is a web doc that tells the story of daily celebrities in Paris. Straight away when opening the site very Parisian music begins, before a wall of a building is made visible. The main graphic is a map, which you can click on to take you to each person. The map also shows which part of Paris you can find them in. I would like to use a map like this for my own web doc.

When you click on each, you get a wide range of media. A video about the person, an information sheet, photos and music used in the video are all available.

One in particular that I loved was about a man named Michel Godin des Mers. He is a man which travels around Paris, fighting for his rights on his self- made ‘cyclo- mobile’. Previously being known as a model and comedian, Michel is also a poet and artist, who sculpts fountains- which can be seen all over his cyclo-mobile.

Each video is in French but subtitles are shown below in order for the English to understand. I loved this web doc as it gave such an atmosphere of Paris itself.

Sound- Starting assignment

Last lesson we started brainstorming ideas for our final assignment. We need to create a sound piece in a group. We have decided to create a news piece for a radio show.

Ideas included the recent death of Peaches Geldof, a piece on domestic violence, theories for the missing Malasian flight and funny experiences at work.

We thought of using vox pops, studio pieces and reanactments for our sound piece.

Sound update

In sound we have just completed our first unmarked assignment.

For this had to create a trailer for a radio advertisement.

Our group decided to do an advertisement for our course, Journalism and Digital Media, at the Hull School of Art and Design.

We began by creating a script, which we then recorded in the sound studio. We also recorded an interview with a second year student to add to our advert.

It was a good way to learn how to use the equipment so we will find it easier next time around.

Law 24/03/14- Copyrighting

This lesson we looked at copyrighting- what you can and cannot write.

Copyrighting ‘protects journalism articles, websites, books, films, TV, radio and sound recordings’.

Literary works are covered for the author’s lifetime plus 70 years, whilst sound lasts for 50 years. This is to protect the heirs.

This will be useful for in the future.

Sound 11.02.14

This lesson we had a looking at sound recorders.

At first I found the lesson really interesting, and worked hard to figure out how they worked.

But then when I tried to use it I got confused, we kept getting such a loud high pitched noise when we tried to record sounds around college. Brian sorted it for us so we carried on recording, and got some good noises such as typing on a keyboard and doors closing.

After this we were shown how to transfer files over on to the computer.

Video 12/12/13

In this lesson I started editing my full video together on Premiere Pro. In the three hours of our lesson I have managed to put the shots in the order I wanted, cut out bits I didn’t want by cropping the footage, and adding fade ins and fade outs between shots using keystones.
I think so far my video is looking good, I just need to add some background music to it, which I will find on the links we have been provided with.
However, when listening to my footage with my headphones for the first time, all of our audio is really hard to hear due to background noise, and the really strong wind we had last week! We spoke to Breon about it and he said he might be able to help us cut out the background noise, so fingers crossed!
